If you haven’t figured it out yet (or if you’re new over here “hi”) , I have a passion for sharing the crucial, vital, underrated impact of our surroundings on the quality of our own life.
I’ve started working on a book about the common denominator to “ordinary” people reaching incredible success both in their professional and personal life.
I assumed that a powerful vision for their future would be it. Turns out it’s not.
And yes, you’ve guessed it: they all have an empowering and supportive environment.
To go even further on the importance of choosing your surrounding intentionally, I wanted to share this mind blowing experiment conducted by Solomon Asch in the 1950s.
The study explored the extent to which individuals conform to group pressure, even when they know the group's judgment is incorrect.
In the experiment, participants were presented with a simple perceptual task where they had to match the length of lines. However, unbeknownst to one participant, the others in the group were actors instructed to give incorrect answers.
Asch found that a significant number of participants conformed to the group's incorrect answers, even when those answers were obviously wrong.
This experiment shows that we have a natural inclination to go along with the group, even if it means disregarding our own perceptions or beliefs.
Ask yourself: Who in my environment do I conform to and is it truly serving my best interests?
**The golden rule**
Trust yourself and curate your surroundings to include people who challenge you AND support you.
With love,
Caroline
