Blame and a challenge

Thursday, March 07, 2024

This week I want to do something a little different,

First, I read this proverb and it hit me profoundly. So I wanted to share it with you, along with my key takeaway.

“He who blames others has a long way to go on his journey.
He who blames himself is halfway there.
He who blames no one has arrived.”

It made me realize how much I use to complain and blame before I started the transformative journey I’m on. And how much I still have to work on.

Next, I want to keep myself accountable and hopefully inspire you to join me on my physical health challenge of the year.

My goal has always been to improve my physical health and feel better in my body, to have more energy, to be healthier and live longer.
I call this goal “beach body year round” 😬

I have had this dream for many years and like many, in spring I would kickoff a workout practice that would barely last past fall. Came winter I was back to a no-workout routine.

This year, on January 8th, I decided to be intentional and disciplined about it. I created a challenge for myself (which at the time felt exciting, attainable but a stretch): doing 1,200 pushups by Dec 31.

By Jan 31, I had done 28 pushups.
In February (short of today’s final count) I did 390 pushups.

My total for the year so far is therefore 418 pushups (and I decided to make this goal a LOT more intimidating: 10,000 pushups by Dec 31) which means I've done 4.18% of my new yearly goal.
Which also means that I’m 1,248 pushups behind for the year now.

Why I’m sharing this?
1️⃣Perfectionism kills traction
Because high achievers like me tend to be perfectionists, we shoot for the Moon but unless we can take quantum leaps every time we don’t even begin.
2️⃣Don’t underestimate small consistent steps
It’s okay to shoot for the Moon. But it’s better to take tiny steps to get there than to never begin because we can’t take big strides at once. Remember the Fable the Tortoise and the Hare? 😉
3️⃣The goal is not the goal
If I don’t hit the goal by Dec 31, I’ll be disappointed but also so proud of myself. Because no matter how many pushups I do, it’ll be so much more than I ever did and so much more than if I had continued my past year’s approach.
The goal is the journey!
4️⃣To invite you in on the challenge
Is there something that you want to do but procrastinate on? If so, what could be the bare minimum you commit to do on a daily or weekly basis? Decide on it and then track it. Get it started.

As for me, I’ll keep you updated on my progress along the way in my newsletter and on the blog.

With love,
Caroline
